We are undeniably living the single most challenging time in ALL of our lives right now. We don’t know what’s next. We’re scared. And we’re living hour by hour, day by day waiting for instructions. The single most important thing we can all do right now is to work together for the greater good of our world.
Let me start by saying that I am absolutely blown away by the outpouring of love and support I’m seeing on social media right now. Forget social distancing. Dr. Sanjay Gupta changed that term a couple of days ago from ‘social distancing’ to ‘personal distancing’. Yes, we do need to create personal distance from one another but that doesn’t mean we need to be socially distanced.
Yes, we do need to create personal distance from one another but that doesn’t mean we need to be socially distanced.
My favorite yogis and fitness studios are all live streaming almost daily to offer connectivity, community and companionship right now. I’m seeing dance classes, cooking classes, live chats, meditations, book clubs, virtual happy hours, game nights, you name it. The fact is, we’re all in this together but we don’t need to feel isolated and alone.
It’s true, we don’t know when life will go back to the way it was but we can’t fixate on that right now. We need to focus on creating ‘a new normal’ to keep ourselves sane, productive, positive and hopeful for the future. We WILL come out of this but it will certainly take time.
How Time Blocking Can Help
One thing we all need right now is structure and a sense of routine. We need it, our kids need it, our brains function better when we have it, and we’re more productive. I have three kids, all teenagers, and although I know my daughters will find creative outlets and a sense of balance, my 13 year old son is a different story. This is not a free pass to play video games 24/7 for the foreseeable future!
So, here’s where time blocking comes into play. I’m setting up a loose block schedule for myself and my daughters and then a bit more structured, detailed block schedule for my son. My son may not like it at first but having a routine will become increasing important in the days ahead.
How To Get Started
- Set your target. Who is this block schedule for?
- Make a list of daily activities you’d like to see take place.
- Set your block windows (timeframes) and assign activities to each of those block windows.
- Publish the block schedule. Print it, post it, put it on a chalkboard, set notification reminders, alarms or use an app!
Set Your Target
If you’re all in it together, set a family block schedule but more than likely you’ll need several. I work from home so I have PLENTY to keep me busy but my kids are a different story. If virtual school is back in session for you or your kids, you may not need a schedule but I think it’s still a good idea to have something set up to keep balance and movement.
Make a List of Activities
I’m going to focus on Monday through Friday and let weekends be weekends, even if they’re all flowing together right now. That will help create a ‘work week’ which is already something we’re very accustom to. Get creative with your list and be realistic with the time blocks. Choose activities or tasks you know you or your family will engage in on a daily basis. If something isn’t working, mix it up.
Set Your Block Windows
So again, be realistic and know that you’ll probably go through several rounds of edits to the schedule as time goes by to find something that works well. If you are balancing work + running a household it’s going to seem overwhelming at times. Just remember to breathe, take breaks often, find some “me time” everyday and stay positive. We can do this!
Publish The Schedule
I’m going to use an app to get started. It will be easier for me (and the kids) to follow with alerts/notifications but I do love the idea of a chalkboard as well. Get creative ya’ll. I’m going to start off by looking at three apps… Cozi Family Calendar, Pocket Planner and Habit Hub. If you’re reading this and you have any awesome suggestions or other app recommendations or creative ways to keep busy, please share in the comments below.
So where do we go from here? No one really knows and it feels quite uncertain right now. Trust me, I’m right there with you. But, let’s take this time to get organized, to get fit, to engage more with our family and loved ones. Have family game nights, movie nights, take family walks, etc. And remember to find balance. You MUST take time for yourself daily. This will be essential in the coming weeks and months ahead.
Stay STRONG my friends. Spread peace and love in every way you know how right now and remember to dig deep for strength and patience. The world is counting on us!
