This Valentine’s Day why not celebrate you! I mean absolutely celebrate your loved ones but the old saying goes that you have to love yourself first and the rest will fall into place.
I am strong. I am powerful. I am capable. I am worthy.
Self-love is incredibly important to your health and longevity. It influences you, it shapes and molds you, and it ultimately defines you. It influences the life choices you make from a mate to how you cope with the challenges in your life.
Self-love is not simply a state of being happy. It’s a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Self-love is dynamic and it grows through actions that mature us. When we act in ways that expand our self-love, we begin to accept our strengths as well as our weaknesses, we have less need to explain our short-comings, we have compassion for ourselves as human beings struggling to find personal meaning, and we are more centered in our life purpose and values.
8 Ways To Practice Self-Love
Maybe you only begin with a few to start but see where you can implement these recommendations in your life and let the self-love grow from there.
1. Be Mindful
Those who have more self-love tend to see the world more clearly and know what they think, feel, and want. They’re mindful of who they are and act on this knowledge, rather than on what others want for them. Being more decisive and assertive is essential and never be afraid to stand up for what you believe in.
2. Choose Happy Whenever Possible
Is happiness a choice? Yes. But being happy requires more than just making the choice that “I choose to be happy”. Sustaining happiness in your life takes commitment, courage, a deep understanding of who you are and knowing your purpose in life; and this does not happen overnight. It is a life long journey. By choosing to embrace happiness into your life, you are taking responsibility for your own contentment.
3. Set Boundaries
You’ll find that you love yourself more when you set limits or say no to things that deplete you physically and emotionally or express poorly who you are. If something doesn’t enhance your life in any way, it’s probably best to avoid it no matter how hard it is to walk away.
4. Practice Good Self-Care
You’ll love yourself more when you take better care of your basic needs. People with high self-love take good care of their body, mind, and soul daily. From eating a healthy diet, to getting proper sleep, to reducing stress, to exercising regularly. Practicing good self-care will help you to stay healthy and resilient.
5. Act on Needs Rather Than Wants
By staying focused on what you need, you turn away from automatic behavior patterns that get you into trouble and keep you stuck in the past, ultimately lessen your self-love. Stay strong, centered, and always look forward in your life. If you find yourself self-soothing by relying on your wants because it’s easy or familiar, correct that behavior and strive to put your needs first.
6. Choose To Surround Yourself With Loving People
One of the best ways to nurture self-love is to find those who know how to nurture and create their own happiness, and share it freely. Spend time around these people and you’ll find yourself seeing the world differently.
7. Begin By Accept Yourself
It’s important to recognize you for EXACTLY who you are. Accept your humanness (the fact that you’re not perfect), before you can truly love yourself. Practice being less hard on yourself. Remember, there are no failures. If you learn and grown from a mistake it’s simply a life lesson and you’ll be all the wiser because of it. Accept the person you are today and embrace the person you want to grow to become. You are beautiful and you are strong. Repeat this DAILY.
8. Live With Intention
It’s important to remember that your mindset and attitude can make or break the changes in your life. How you act, interact and react, how you plan and how you conquer your challenges all play pivotal roles in the outcome. One key factor is to find harmony within yourself. You’ll accept and love yourself more, whatever is happening in your life, when you live with purpose. Your purpose doesn’t have to be crystal clear to you. If your intention is to live a healthy and meaningful life, you will make decisions that support this intention, and feel good about yourself when you succeed in this purpose.
You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anyone. ~ Maya Angelou
The fact is, you can only love a person as much as you love yourself. When you practice self-love, you’ll be amazed at how it can lift your mood and lead to more positive outcomes in your life. Embrace these tips and use them daily. You’re certainly worth it!
