Is There Really a Perfect Bar?

bigcrop

Happy Thursday! This week we did our research to find out if there really is a ‘perfect bar’ out there. To keep things simple, we chose some of the most popular bars on the market today and rated them on taste, texture and nutritional profile.

Our panel of judges put their taste buds to the test and the feedback was quite diverse. The bars were rated on a scale from 1 to 10 for each category (1 = lowest/10 = highest) and results were measured as an average.

Protein: 20g
Fiber: 19g

Pros: dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free, non-GMO and vegan, low GI

This high protein bar really stacks up on nutrition! With a whopping 20g of protein and only 1 gram of sugar, it is a great contender. However, taste and texture were on the lower side. The bar has a gritty texture which was a bit off putting to some. If you’re looking for a high protein bar with clean ingredients and a great nutritional profile (look at that fiber) then give D’s No Cow Bar a try!

Cons: must be refrigerated

The Perfect Bar stacked up pretty well on taste and texture amongst the judges. It has a sweet peanut butter flavor and a nice texture that isn’t too chewy or grainy. The bar does have an oily residue but that could have been from the peanut butter. This bar could be used as a meal replacement with it’s nutritional profile.

Texture: 6.5

Nutrition
Calories: 240

Pros: gluten-free, low GI, non-GMO, high protein, low GI

This bar has a good peanut butter flavor with a low GI rating. It is a good choice for those who need to watch sugar intake. Though it has a low GI rating, there are 11g of sugar alcohol which means it will still have a slight effect on your blood glucose level. The texture of the bar is soft and easy to chew.

probar

4.) ProBar (Peanut Butter Chocolate Flavor)

Rating Average
Taste:
8
Texture: 7.75

Nutrition
Calories: 290
Fat: 10g
Sugar: 15g
Protein: 20g
Fiber: 4g
Carbs: 32g

Pros: certified gluten-free, certified non-GMO, high protein, contains flax and chia seed omega oil blend

This bar has an excellent texture with just the right amount of crunch and chew. The taste of the bar is also very pleasing and could almost be mistaken for a candy bar but it’s packed with omega blend oils. The bar contains soy but is non-GMO certified. It also uses agave syrup and dried cane syrup which gives it a higher GI. We’re not fans of agave so for this reason it’s not a top contender from a nutritional profile standpoint but the judges did rate it highly on taste and texture.

Mid-Protein Bars Sampled

The infamous Cliff Bar has been around for a long time and it’s a favorite among many. It has a nice texture similar to a no-bake cookie and a great flavor that will satisfy your sweet tooth. However, the bar contains the largest amount of sugar out of all the bars we tested. It’s certainly not a low GI option so certainly something to consider. Although it’s not certified organic, most of the ingredients are organic.

The Squarebar is a vegan-friendly option that has a great dark chocolate flavor for all the chocoholics out there. The texture is easy to chew and almost melts in your mouth. It has a decent amount of protein and is sweetened with coconut nectar which is good to see. It’s also certified gluten-free.

gomacro

7.) GoMacro (Sunflower and Chocolate Flavor)

Rating Average
Taste:
4.5
Texture: 7

Nutrition
Calories: 260
Fat: 8g
Sugar: 9g
Protein: 10g
Fiber: 3g
Carbs: 38g

Pros: certified organic, certified gluten-free, certified vegan, certified non-GMO, sourced sustainably, macrobiotic

This bar had a very interesting flavor. While some tasters loved it, others did not, giving it a lower taste rating. It had notable sunflower but most tasters thought the flavor overall was bland. However, the texture was rated quite well. It had a good chewiness to it and slight crunch. Aside from taste and texture, the bar offers some great benefits. It has a lower amount of sugar and a decent protein amount. Maybe another flavor would have gone over better with the judges as everyone did enjoy the texture.

* We ended up testing a second flavor (Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip) and it was definitely tastier than the first. A little higher in calories, fat and sugar but all in all, a good flavor profile.

rx

8.) RXBar (Mint Chocolate Flavor)

Rating Average
Taste:
4
Texture: 3.25

Nutrition
Calories: 210
Fat: 9g
Sugar: 14g
Protein: 12g
Fiber: 3g
Carbs: 24g

Pros: gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, no added sugar

The RXBar was rated the lowest on taste and texture out of all the bars tested. We really wanted to love this bar for it’s clean ingredients and nutritional profile but the texture was extremely chewy and got stuck in our teeth long after we finish sampling it. The flavor fell short on this one too. It does not contain soy, dairy, gluten or added sugar which is a bonus. If you can get overlook the texture of this bar it’s a good option based on it’s nutritional value.

Overall, our favorite bar based on taste and texture was the ProBar and our favorite bar based on nutrition profile was definitely D’s The No Cow Bar. We hope this week’s post gives you some good insight into choosing which bar is right for you! Please give us your feedback as we LOVE hearing from you. What’s your favorite bar?

Happy and Healthy Blessings,
The Roots Team
